Who Are We?
Meet John
After seeing person after person come through my fire station looking for help with interviewing for a job as a firefighter I decided that I needed to do something to help more people. There is a simple process that can be used to improve your performance in an interview even if you do not know anything about the fire service. I started working on Firefighter Interview Prep with Mike because we both have a passion for helping people reach their goals.
I was lucky enough to get hired quickly once I decided to start testing for a fire job. Somehow I made it through the interview process and was hired without much experience with interviewing. Throughout my career I have been through a few promotional processes where I have developed my interview skills. I have learned that interview skills are necessary throughout a career as a firefighter and it is a skill that must be practiced and developed.
Firefighting has been my entire life. My dad was in the fire service so I grew up in a firehouse. I have been in the fire service since I was 19 years old. I have been with my current department over 18 years and have been blessed with a great career. My wife and three young children make it all worthwhile. One of my favorite things in life is getting home after a shift and being swarmed with hugs from my family.

Meet Mike
When I was first getting into the fire service I had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t understand the hiring process, I had no contacts at a fire department, and I had no idea what to expect from an interview. All I knew is that I wanted to be a firefighter, and I needed to figure out how to get the job.
Once I had made the decision to be a firefighter I was all in. I started taking fire science classes, researching the hiring process, and took every opportunity to meet people who could help me on my path to getting my dream job. It was a lot of work, but I remember feeling like I was ready to get hired when I went to my first fire job interview.
Looking back, I was still very unprepared to walk into a fire job interview and do well. I knew I was the right person for the job, but I couldn’t figure out how to explain that to the interview panel. I struggled to translate my knowledge, skills, abilities, and experiences into marketable qualities that I could display for an interview panel. However, after more interviews and a ton of practice, I figured it out.
I have now been a Firefighter at my current department for the last 6 years. I love coming to work. It is exactly the job I hoped it would be. Now I am taking everything I learned, the hard way, and organizing it here to help other people who want this job as badly as I did. The information from Firefighter Interview Prep will help you get the job you want, and save you years of struggling to get past the interview and into the fire house.
